The Split Stone – Memorial to the Victims of Deportations
The Split Stone is a memorial in Dundaga dedicated to the victims of communist genocide and deportations. It was established in 1989, at a time when discussions in Latvia about Soviet repressions and the need to honor the memory of those who suffered were becoming increasingly open.
The symbol of the memorial is a split stone – a reminder of the broken destinies and the painful history experienced by many Latvian families.
On the stone, sculptor Vilnis Titāns carved the words:
"I will lay the dream of my homeland on my pillow…"
This memorial invites visitors to pause, remember, and honor those who were taken from their homes and whose lives were irreversibly changed by deportations. It is an important historical and commemorative site in Dundaga.
